The “Sicilian Rouge High GABA” seedling gardening kits we provided in May 2021 have been very positively received by our home gardener consumer panel. Due to the overwhelming response and strong interest indicated by our monitors, we have decided to start selling the tomato fruit itself from September 15th, 2021. A puree product made of the same tomato will be available in the near future.
Pioneer EcoScience Co, Ltd., which is in charge of the sales and marketing of the “Sicilian Rouge High GABA” tomato, has also opened “Aozora Tomato Gakuen” (directly translated as “Blue Sky Tomato School”) as a bidirectional community platform (https://p-e-s.co.jp/aozora) for home gardeners and health food enthusiasts. For now, the tomato will only be sold in Japan and we intend to keep on sharing the positive influence of gene edited crop and food trends globally by leveraging the power of this community platform.
Sanatech Seed Co, Ltd., a start-up company partnering with the University of Tsukuba, received a parental line of the Sicilian Rouge variety from Pioneer EcoScience, and developed the F1 variety “Sicilian Rouge High GABA” with enhanced GABA content through gene editing*1. Pioneer EcoScience will take the lead in commercializing and selling products related to this variety. As a gene edited seed development company, Sanatech Seed will continue to develop new varieties to meet the needs of both consumers and growers.
